The Joplin Paintings | Travis Pratt

2015-01-19-TidalLoan

I found this story via a friend on Facebook. I live only a few hours from Joplin, and have friends who worked in local hospitals that treated the injured from the May 2011 tornado. That night, I remember my cousin calling me to ask me if I was headed out south to chase storms. Side note; I’ve always had a passion for weather and storm chasing. You can say it used to be an active hobby of mine throughout college. I knew it was suppose to be bad around our area and south that night. I had been looking at computer models and maps for almost a week leading up to that day. For some reason I didn’t make it that far south, (probably a good thing). I can’t remember why, but I do remember everything I saw on TV and the interwebs afterwards. I had friends go down and help, friends calling family, etc. etc.

The Joplin Paintings by Travis Pratt are amazing. Large scale paintings depicting the aftermath of the Joplin Tornado and the affects on his extended family. I hight recommend you check out the article on at the Huffington Post (I’ve always been bad at “art talk”) and check out Part 1 & Part 2 on You Tube. If your are in Kansas City, you can see Part 2 of the exhibit at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center until January 31st.

“As a celebration of the beauty and joy of cycling, 300 noteworthy quotes are assembled to create this artwork. Drawn from a wide variety of bike lovers – from presidents to pro racers, scientists to artists – this collection expresses what makes cycling more than a sport. Some quotes are slices of life, while some are deeper musings. But all of them will resonate with, and inspire, your cyclist’s soul.”
